Latin II

Welcome to Latin II!

Our text is Cambridge Latin Course Unit 3: http://www.cambridgelatin.org/cup.html

In addition, we will very frequently use the British support website for Cambridge Latin Course, www.cambridgescp.com . There you will work on your vocabulary, read stories, do activities related to the grammar and stories, and follow weblinks to learn more about Roman life. The British edition separates our Unit 3 into two books, Unit 3 and Unit 4, so that’s the way you will find the chapters on the site arranged.

You may work through the stages at your own pace. It is very important, however, that you do some Latin work every day. A typical pace for Latin II is two weeks per stage, with a couple of extra weeks for review when you need them. This pace will let you finish Latin I in one year.

Vocabulary Strategies

These strategies will help you master the vocabulary for each chapter. This is very important. As you reach more advanced readings, knowing 70% or more of the vocabulary on the page will keep you reading; knowing less may make you too discouraged to continue. So master your vocabulary for each chapter, and review often!

How to Read a Story

Read this before you begin the first chapter, and follow this method every time you read.

Guiding Questions

My assignments for each stage begin with four questions. One question relates to Latin grammar, one to vocabulary, one to culture and history, and one to reading strategies. Use these questions at the beginning of the stage to orient yourself to the new concepts, and at the end to see if you have accomplished the most important objectives of the chapter.
