Latin IIIWelcome to Latin III! Our text is Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4: http://www.cambridgelatin.org/cup.html In addition, we will very frequently use the British support website for Cambridge Latin Course, www.cambridgescp.com . There you will work on your vocabulary, read stories, do activities related to the grammar and stories, and follow weblinks to learn more about Roman life. The British edition Unit 5 closely matches the first half of our Unit 4, so you will find your website activities under Unit 5. In addition, we will also use a great deal of the material in the Cambridge Latin Anthology, also found at the same website. You may work through the stages at your own pace. It is very important, however, that you do some Latin work every day. A typical pace for Latin III is two weeks per stage for Stages 35–40, and three weeks per stage for some of the longer chapters in the last half of the book. This pace will let you finish Latin III in one year. I have scheduled less workbook activity and more ancillary reading this year. I want us to really build up our reading skill. If you find you cannot complete all the ancillary readings and still keep up the pace, please talk to me. Vocabulary StrategiesThese strategies are general ideas to help students at all levels master and maintain vocabulary. This is very important. As you reach more advanced readings, knowing 70% or more of the vocabulary on the page will keep you reading; knowing less may make you too discouraged to continue. At this point in your Latin career, you may find that your readings contain a lot of words you don’t know. Whenever you look up a word, put a dot in the margin next to the word in your dictionary or glossary. Any time you put a third dot next to the same word, you need to make a card for that word and get it mastered. You’ll be glad you did! Plan of the YearThis year, we are concentrating on prose, so the order of chapters will be 35–41, 43, 46, 48, 42, 44, 45, 47. This will better prepare you to take the Latin III Prose National Latin Exam. Guiding QuestionsMy assignments for each stage begin with four questions. One question relates to Latin grammar, one to vocabulary, one to culture and history, and one to reading strategies. Use these questions at the beginning of the stage to orient yourself to the new concepts, and at the end to see if you have accomplished the most important objectives of the chapter.
